Story of Turning Point Church

In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, "I will build my church."

A love for praising God through music was the seed that eventually gave birth to Turning Point Church (formerly Hosanna! Christian Center).  Jerry and Bonnie Hatfield were once part of a Gospel Quartet that not only sang, but also ministered to God's people.  After Brother Jerry received the Lord's call to pastor, he and Bonnie expanded their ministry by opening up their home for church meetings.  Five other families began meeting with them regularly in 1992, which marked the beginning of Hosanna! Christian Center.  However this little house church soon outgrew the Hatfields' living room and went on to meet in several temporary locations before coming to the present one in 1994.  In 2005, the Lord instructed Pastor Jerry Hatfield to change the name of the Church.  Turning Point Church was chosen because everyone reaches a turning point in their lives as God encourages them to become a Born Again Christian.

Please join us as we celebrate the Lord on Sunday mornings and other special times during the week.  Our gifts of praise and worship include contemporary choruses and traditional hymns.  We allow people the freedom to meaningfully express themselves to God, sometimes enthusiastically, sometimes spontaneously, sometimes quietly - however each person is directed by the Holy Spirit.  Through the Biblical approach of clapping our hands, lifting our hands, speaking and singing praise to God, anointing with oil, laying on of hands and dancing before the Lord, we welcome His presence into our services. The spiritual gifts of speaking in unknown tongues, intepretation, prophesy and words from the Lord are active in our services.  Sermons and lessons based on solid Biblical principals teach the truth of God's holy word and its relevancy to the everyday struggles of life faced by men, women, youth and children.  Come join us and be encouraged in the Lord!

 

What is important to us?  What are our priorities?

The One True Triune God - Revealed to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Praise - We were birthed in music and we love to use it in joyful praises to God!
Prayer - We pray without ceasing.  For example, every chair in our sanctuary - the chair YOU occupy - has been covered in prayer!  So expect to be blessed when you worship with us!
God's Word -  You'll hear it proclaimed in every message.  The Holy Scriptures are the verbally inspired Word of God, our infallible rule of faith and practice.
You - Our heart's desire is to see every person ministered to so they in turn can freely use their unique gifts to minister to others.
The Lord Jesus Christ - The Word made Flesh, born of a Virgin, sacrificed on the Cross as our perfect sin offering, raised bodily from the dead and is now exalted at God's right hand.  Salvation comes only through repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His atoning Blood.  Jesus is the only reason for Turning Point's existence!

Our Leaders:  Pastor and Advisory Council

Pastor Jerry Hatfield grew up in Michigan, but found his wife, Bonnie, when he moved to Texas City in 1967.  Together they met the Lord in 1975, and Jesus has been their 'passion' ever since.  Because of their personal struggles with stressful life events and difficult circumstances, they have become especially sensitive to the hurts of others and have a heartfelt compassion for those who are 'wounded'.  Pastor Jerry trained for ministry at Abundant Life School of Ministry and Berean School of the Bible.  He has attended the Jack W. Hayford School of Pastoral Nurture and has earned his Doctorate Degree in Theology and Biblical Studies from Grace Bible College and Seminary.  Pastor Jerry and Bonnie have pastored Turning Point Church (Hosanna! Christian Center) since the Lord founded this work in 1992.  One of their special giftings is in the area of marriage and family counseling, having received training through the American Association of Christian Counselors.  Jerry and Bonnie are blessed with three children and seven grandchildren.

The pastor is assisted by an Advisory Council made up of Elders and Deacons.

Turning Point Church? 

Why do we clap our hands?  O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.  Psalm 47:1

Why do we lift our hands?   I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath or doubting.  1 Timothy 2:8

Why do we anoint with oil?   Is any sick among you?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  James 5:14

Why do we practice the laying on of hands?   Let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of laying on of hands.  Hebrews 6:1-2

Why do people sometimes fall down under God?s power?   Then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister.  2 Chronicles 5:13

Why do we speak in an unknown tongue, intepret, prophesy, and give words from the Lord?   To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge.  To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing.  To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.  1 Corinthians 12:8-10

Why do we dance before the Lord?   Let them praise his name in the dance; let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.  Psalm 149:3
